For the first time in more than 25 years, the FDA has approved a new sunscreen UV filter for use in the United States: bemotrizinol, also known as BEMT.
This is a big moment for the sunscreen category, not because it means every current sunscreen is bad, but because it gives consumers more options. And when it comes to sun protection, more thoughtful options are a good thing.
What is bemotrizinol?
Bemotrizinol is a broad-spectrum UV filter that helps protect against both UVA and UVB rays. It has already been used internationally in places like Europe and Asia for many years, but until now, it was not approved for use in U.S. sunscreens.
One of the reasons people are excited about BEMT is that it is known for being photostable, meaning it holds up well when exposed to sunlight. That matters because a sunscreen filter that stays stable can help support more consistent protection in a formula.
Why this approval matters
For years, the U.S. has had fewer approved sunscreen filter options compared to many other countries. This limited what brands could formulate with, especially when it came to newer, more cosmetically elegant UV filters.
That does not mean you should stop using your current sunscreen. It simply means the U.S. sunscreen category has been waiting a long time for innovation.
BEMT’s approval is a step toward giving consumers access to more modern sun protection technology, especially for people who want strong UVA coverage, lightweight textures, and formulas that feel better for daily use.
What about mineral sunscreen?
Mineral sunscreens are still a great option, especially for people who prefer zinc oxide or titanium dioxide, or who want a more traditional mineral-based approach.
At Gin Amber Beauty, we still believe in choosing products that align with your values, your skin, and your lifestyle. Some people feel best using mineral sunscreen. Others may prefer newer non-mineral filters once they become available. The most important thing is that people have access to options they feel comfortable using consistently.
This approval should not be seen as “mineral versus chemical.” It should be seen as progress.
Why UVA protection deserves more attention
When people think about sunscreen, they often think about SPF. But SPF mainly reflects protection from UVB rays, which are the rays most associated with visible burning.
UVA rays are different. They penetrate more deeply into the skin and are strongly connected to visible signs of skin aging, including discoloration, uneven tone, and loss of firmness. This is why broad-spectrum protection matters, especially for anyone focused on long-term skin health and graceful aging.
BEMT helps expand the toolbox for UVA protection, which is one reason this approval is such a big deal.
Does this mean better sunscreens are coming?
Most likely, yes. The approval of BEMT may allow U.S. brands to create sunscreens that feel lighter, apply more elegantly, and offer advanced broad-spectrum protection.
For many people, texture is one of the biggest reasons they skip sunscreen. If a product feels heavy, greasy, chalky, or uncomfortable, they are less likely to use it every day. Better filter options can help brands create formulas people actually enjoy wearing.
And that is the real win: sun protection that fits more easily into real life.
The bigger conversation
This approval also raises an important question: why has it taken so long?
Many sunscreen filters used internationally are still not approved in the United States. American consumers have had access to fewer UV filter options than many other parts of the world, which has slowed innovation in the category.
BEMT is a meaningful step forward, but it should not be the last one. Consumers deserve access to modern, well-studied, effective sunscreen options without waiting decades.
Whether you prefer mineral sunscreen, newer UV filters, hats, shade, or a combination of everything, the goal is the same: support your skin in a way that feels aligned, practical, and sustainable for your everyday life.
More options mean more people can find sun protection they actually love using. And that is something worth celebrating. Thank you for reading, till next time my Amber Babies! Please don't forget to subscribe and follow me on YouTube, Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok 🥳
