How To Properly Clean Your Dermaroller?

How To Properly Clean Your Dermaroller?

Dermarollers are an amazing tool to help with a variety of skin issues like acne scars, wrinkles, stretch marks and even hair loss. But there is a ton of misinformation being spread around, especially about disinfecting dermarollers. Since dermarollers work by causing micro-injuries in the skin, it's important to keep them clean so you can continue to enjoy new collagen generated naturally by the body. Avoid one of the most common dermaroller mistakes by making sure you take all appropriate measures to disinfect your dermaroller.

Whether you are dermarolling the face, the scalp, or any other applicable parts of the body, dirty dermarollers will always pose a risk of infection that you should avoid at all cost. The good news is that it's fairly easy to prevent this from happening, as long as you're consistent in your dermarolling routine as well as your disinfection efforts. Read on for a few tips for cleaning your dermaroller, which will prove useful to the dermarolling pro and the dermarolling beginner alike.

Should You Clean a Dermaroller Before First Use?

If you have just bought a new dermaroller, make sure it comes in sterile packaging. If the dermaroller is wrapped in some sort of loose material, it's a good idea to clean it before you use it for the first time. If your dermaroller came inside a sterilized vacuum-sealed packaging that wasn't damaged in any way, then your dermaroller should be clean and safe to use. BUT, why not get some early practice by disinfecting your dermaroller before you use it for the first time just for good measure?

Disinfecting Your Dermaroller and Skin

In the past, options for safely disinfecting a dermaroller were limited. Many of us relied on 70% Isopropyl Alcohol, which, while effective, poses certain risks—especially for those with sensitive skin. Alcohol can strip the skin of its natural moisture, leading to irritation and dryness. Recognizing the need for a gentler alternative, I collaborated with my manufacturer to develop a safe, natural solution specifically designed for this purpose.

Watch this video below for more details and a demonstration on how to use it on the dermaroller and skin!

For Disinfecting the Skin:

Apply the Foam: Dispense a pump of Foam Cleanser onto your fingertips.
Spread Gently: Evenly distribute the foam over your skin, ensuring full coverage.
Wait: Allow the foam to sit on your skin for at least 1 minute. This duration is crucial, as it gives the foam time to effectively neutralize any germs and impurities.
Wipe, Don’t Rinse: After a minute, gently wipe your skin with a dry or slightly damp cloth. Avoid rinsing to ensure the foam’s protective barrier remains intact.

For Disinfecting the Dermaroller:

Initial Application: Dispense 2-3 pumps of Foam Cleanser onto your dermaroller, ensuring all needles are covered.
Allow Contact Time: Let the dermaroller sit in an open case, allowing the foam to fully break down. This contact time is essential for thorough disinfection.
No Need to Wipe: Once the foam has dissolved, there's no need to wipe the dermaroller. It’s ready for use.
Post-Treatment Sanitation: After using the dermaroller, apply 2-3 more pumps of Foam Cleanser to sanitize it before storage.

As mentioned before, during the cleaning process, be careful with the needles because they are easy to damage and bend. Try not to let them touch any borders or hard surfaces. Also, do not try to clean the dermaroller in any alternative ways. Do not use sterilizing machines or try to boil your dermaroller in water -- serious structural damage can occur. Just using tap water is also not enough. Tap water might also have unclean particles.
